Dele Alli rescued a late stage for Tottenham to deny visitors Watford a primary Premier League win of this year amid video helper (VAR) confusion.
With the out-of-form hosts seeking a way back Hornets keeper Ben Foster flapped with Alli controlling before turning the ball into the internet, in an 86th-minute cross.
The video referee determined it and reviewed the goal was correctly given. The display suggested that the decision has beenno purpose. After a spell of hardship, the goal stood.
For periods before Allis intervention, it had looked as though Mauricio Pochettinos side went to endure a defeat in six games.
Watford, who lost Danny Welbeck took the lead if Abdoulaye Doucoure swept home Daryl Janmaats cross.
And they had a penalty appeal turned down by referee Chris Kavanagh – along with the VAR – when Jan Vertonghen attracted down Gerard Deulofeu.
However, despite coming close, their wait for a Premier League win continues and they stay bottom.
Watford will feel hard done by following VAR controversy.
It looked like they should have had a penalty when 1-0 up in the first half since the monitoring leg of Vertonghen attracted down Deulofeu in the box.
The VAR decided Chris Kavanagh had not made a clear and obvious error. Only onedecision has been affected by the VAR in the Premier League all season – such as offside together using reversals down to factual incidents.
It then seemed like the Hornets had been supplied a reprieve that was late when the screen statedno goal from Allis equaliser – although Kavanagh eventually made apparent the target had stood.
Players are not permitted to touch the ball with their arms – accidentally – under regulations. It was decided, however, that the goal should stand with the call deeming that the ball had come off the shoulder of Alli.
More to follow.
