Wales have been covering rugby balls in baby oil to get ready for humidity at the Rugby World Cup in Japan.
The technique is just one of a number tried as Wales build-up on Monday, 23 September in Tokyo City to their Pool D championship opener against Georgia.
“We’ve been utilizing wet balls and already been using baby oil on them as well,” said coach Warren Gatland.
“We have taped them up as well, and we’ve already been through this process from the [training] camps we had.”
Gatland says preparations in Switzerland and Turkey have been intended to help his players deal with the conditions in Japan.
“We have been around two camps at which one was in elevation and it was really hot in Switzerland, then it was that the late 30s in Turkey,” he explained.
“We have done as far as possible in terms of dealing with the warmth.
“I think the humidity is going to be a factor. With the kick-offs that are later those temperatures are going to drop to about 20 degrees, although It is possible to observe it is.
“It’s going to be a good deal cooler, but the battle then will be the humidity and coping with a slick ball. It is the way we cope with that.
“The players who have already been to New Zealand will have experienced this. I come in Hamilton, it cluttered there.
“We know what it’s like and we have players who have undergone a great deal of night rugby, therefore we feel we have trained well. We are looking forward to it.”
After confronting Georgia, Wales and Fiji, Australia and Uruguay play with as they challenge for the quarter-finals at the final campaign of Gatland in charge.
