Team USA captain Juli Inkster has been fast to pay tribute to both teams after viewing Team Europe snatch the Solheim Cup from the Americans’ palms in fashion in Gleneagles.
After a see-saw series of 12 singles matches on the last day, everything came back to the last putt on the final green, with Suzann Pettersen holing a birdie putt to edge outside Marina Alex 1up and clinch a 14.5-13.5 win for Europe.
“We watched a lot of great matches on the market,” said Inkster. “But you know what, they only played a bit better . But as you understand that’s the way it goes in golfclubs.
“We had a terrific time. We had six rookies out there which played amazing. I think they got half a point or at least a point. And I couldn’t ask any one of those girls, the way they grinded through that weather.
“They just played a half a point . Nevertheless, it’s terrific for women’s golf and I’m really pleased with my team. I am really proud to have the ability to represent the USA.
“And you know what, Suzann left a wonderful putt. And you also know , the Solheim Cup does not come down to that putt, but she made it. To go right ahead and roll that putt in, it is impressive. That’s why she is Suzann.”
Inkster considers the contest in Scotland this week’s grade will allow the women’s game and the players control respect that is new.
“I think a whole lot of individuals overlook women’s golf plus they don’t give it the credit we deserve,” she explained. “However, these women are athletes. They are excellent at what they’re doing. And it really irks me the way since I do not think these girls should take a back seat to 28, we always must take a back seat.
“Not their golfing, however, the way that they handled themselves who they are. We must grind for everything we do.”
Inkster was also quick to match her group after a number of them were in tears afterwards going so close to retaining the trophy.
“We had a couple of tears. And I said it is okay. Nevertheless, the most important thing is we had a great week, and now you know what, the Europeans played amazing. And we are likely to have a really great party.
“However, the sun’s likely to appear tomorrow. This will provide you with men fuel and fire for another 2 years to work to be to try to get this cup back.
“Therefore, I just said, hold your heads up because you shouldn’t be disappointed. The LPGA was represented by you. You represented the USA and [with] great sportsmanship and integrity.”
After leading them to success at 2015 and 2017, inkster captained that the USA team for a third time, but she affirmed she will not be back in charge at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio at 2021.
“I am 2-1, I believe I will stop while I’m ahead,” she explained.
“I am really happy where I am at. I have had the honor to perform this 3 times and it’s been an honour. It’s not really about the wins and losses; it’s all about the memories along with the camaraderie.”
