Roger Federer suffered a shock 3-6 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-2 defeat in the quarter-finals of the US Open in the hands of Grigor Dimitrov.
Even the 20-time Grand Slam winner had looked destined for a against Rafael Nadal in what would have become the rivals’ first meeting at Flushing Meadows.
But Bulgarian Dimitrov awoke that script with success over the Swiss, that appeared out of sorts through a five-set defeat, hitting at 60 unforced errors and had a medical time-out.
Dimitrov had not beaten Federer in any of their seven games, and had taken just two sets off him.
In the previous four, Daniil Medvedev, who knocked Stan Wawrinka out to hit his first Grand Slam semi will be faced by Dimitrov.
