The Cleveland Cavaliers are somehow in an enviable position.
If the blockbuster deal goes through, they will have a point guard in Isaiah Thomas who’s coming off a year in which he outperformed Kyrie Irving (by a substantial amount) during the regular season.
Even if the hip of the acquisition remains debatable, LeBron James will be capable of shouldering more responsibilities, while Kevin Love and Jae Crowder team up to keep the 2016 champions playing at a high level. Let’s not forget the impact of adding Ante Zizic as frontcourt depth.
If the transaction is vetoed because of Thomas’ wellbeing, the Cavaliers will soldier with a malcontent Irving or find a new taker for the All-Star point guard. In any circumstance, they’ll stay filled with talent.
This offseason will be deemed a failure if they can’t locate a huge yield for Irving–along with the Thomas swap surely qualifies as such–since fixing their biggest problem (defense) was not exactly done together with the additions of Derrick Rose, Jose Calderon and Jeff Green. But they could score aplomb, which will make them heavy favorites to win at least 54 games.
James doesn’t seem to have declined whatsoever as his age swells. Love enjoys more chemistry than ever and Tristan Thompson is only advancing. This may be an old roster, but it’s 1 brimming over with talent, and most of the pieces fit.
