Diego Simeones Rojiblancos needed a summer of severe motion, the most notable of which saw Portuguese wonderkid Joao Felix unite on a record 120M-euro deal from Benfica. Atleti also looked strong in pre-season play — for what thats worth — scoring a win over a 2-1 win over Juventus and Real Madrid at New Jersey .
Historic trends also tell us Simeones squad is a very safe bet: Atletico finished ahead of Real Madrid in 2017-18 and 2018-19, also hasnt finished outside the top three (or under anyone apart from Bar??a and Real) since 2011-12.
There are just two other genuine challengers such as Atletico in Sevilla (+800) and Valencia (+600); the former has not finished ahead of Atletico since 2010-11, while the latter hasnt since 2011-12.
It remains to be seen whether manager Julen Lopetegui will steer Sevilla into being a squad back; the Spain youth coach struggled in Porto in his only past club project.
At Valencia, a fantastic summer has seen manager Marcelino add quality pieces in goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen (Barcelona) and forward Maxi Gomez (Celta); final year was a crazy ride to the Valencians, who started horribly but caught fire down the stretch to finish fourth, and their summer developments should have them in the top five this year.
It is interesting to note a scarcity of odds love for Getafe (+4000), which ended a club-best 5th at La Liga last season but is predicted to struggle with fixture congestion and regress into a more typical mid-table finish.
Given that Atletico added a high quality and the club of Simeone punches above the weight of its own squad on paper, its unlikely either will provide it a run on this bet.
